Sources: Arresting reporters must be handled by a special unit

The White House plans to classify Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich as a "wrongfully imprisoned" citizen, sources told the US newspaper.

The journalist was arrested in Russia last week on charges of espionage. The new classification means his case ends up with a special unit of the State Department, focused on getting Americans arrested or taken hostage abroad released.

According to the newspaper's sources, the White House may proceed with the measure as early as this week.

- Regardless of who he is, and for this type of crime, a defendant in a similar manner would normally not receive prison, says defense attorney Michael Mullen to the Hill newspaper.

The next hearing date is December 4.

Mike Pence may testify against Trump after the storm Former US Vice President Mike Pence will not appeal the court order requiring him to testify before a special jury about Donald Trump's attempt to invalidate the 2020 presidential election, his advisers announced Wednesday, NBC News reports.
