Population growth in the world
The population peaks in 2090 – then it turns down
Earth's population is expected to increase until the year 2090, when it will reach a peak of 10.4 billion. This is what the UN writes in its population report on Wednesday, according to AFP.
In the coming decades, population growth is expected to slow down in large parts of Europe and Asia. At the same time, Africa is expected to go from the current 1.4 billion inhabitants to 3.9 billion by the end of the century.
The concern over the rapid population growth of the last hundred years shows itself in the two most populous countries in the world, China and India, where the number of newborns has slowed down sharply.
- We do not think that population figures should lead to anxiety or worry. Instead, they should be seen as signs of progress and development, says Andrea Wojnar, representative of the UN agency UNFPA in India, to Reuters.

UN data: India bigger than China in mid-year
India overtakes China as the world's most populous country in the middle of the year, AFP and Reuters report with reference to the UN's annual population report.
The number of Indians is expected to reach 1.428 billion shortly, making its population three million larger than China's. The Bloomberg news agency states that India has already passed.
India's population has increased by more than a billion since 1950, when the United Nations began collecting demographic data.
Meanwhile, China's population growth has stalled due to the country's one-child policy, which was introduced in the 1980s and scrapped in 2016. Last year, China's population shrank for the first time since the 1960s.
