No truce in sight - UN appeals for peaceful holiday: "Give civilians a chance to escape"
UN Secretary-General António Guterres calls for at least a three-day ceasefire in Sudan, reports Reuters. The truce would apply during the Muslim holiday of id al-fitr, which begins today.
- It would also give civilians a chance to escape conflict areas and give them the opportunity to seek care, he says.
At the same time, sources told the news agency that the United States is preparing to station soldiers in nearby Djibouti.
- It is done for preventive purposes and to be able to facilitate if US embassy personnel need to leave the country, says the Pentagon in a statement.

UN: Up to 20,000 have fled the fighting in Sudan
Between 10,000 and 20,000 people in Sudan have fled to neighboring Chad since fighting between the militia group RSF and the country's military broke out last week, reports AFP.
The WHO estimates that 330 people have died in the conflict and that 3,200 have been injured.
The UN children's rights organization Unicef also states that at least nine children have been killed and that another 50 have been injured. Before the conflict broke out, around 50,000 malnourished children were being cared for in Sudan, the BBC reports.
- These vulnerable children need care around the clock, something that is threatened by the escalating violence, says Unicef in a statement.
