Security around the Baltic Sea
Finnish police deny the minister's information - cable accidentally damaged
At least one of the two internet cables to Sweden that was damaged in Finland was accidentally cut by an excavator. This is stated by Telekombolaget Elisa for Helsingin Sanomat.
- Unfortunately, this is what happens, says Elisa's security manager Jaakko Wallenius.
What caused the second cable break is currently unclear. Carl Oskar-Bohlin (M), Sweden's minister for civil defence, has told Aftonbladet that Finnish police are investigating the incident as a possible sabotage. Finnish police deny on their website that any criminal investigation is underway.
Finland's Minister of Communications Lulu Ranne writes on X, just like her Swedish ministerial colleague, that the matter is "taken seriously".

The Syrian war
Expert: Without Turkey, the offensive would not have taken place
After the rebels in Syria captured Aleppo, more and more eyes are now directed towards Turkey. The country has long had influence in Syria and is said to have a hand in the game in the new offensive that began last week.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Islamist movement leading the rebel advance, is not directly supported by Turkey unlike other Syrian rebel factions. However, Turkey-backed groups are coordinating with HTS, according to the Financial Times.
Turkey expert and author Gönul Tol at the Middle East Institute in Washington does not believe the offensive took place without Turkey's approval.
- Turkey saw an opportunity to change the dynamics on the ground, weaken al-Assad and show the next US administration that the country can effectively curb Iranian influence, he says.
The political situation in Denmark
Foreign flags are banned in Denmark at the turn of the year
A majority in the Danish Parliament today voted yes to ban the flying of foreign flags in the country, reports the news agency Ritzau. The new ban comes into force at the turn of the year.
There are some exceptions. The Nordic flags and Germany's are still allowed. In a statement, the Department of Justice states that additional exceptions may be added, using the Ukrainian flag as an example.
- The Dannebrogen is the most important national symbol we have in Denmark. A symbol that binds the Danes together as a people, and which should have a very special status in Denmark, says Minister of
Justice Peter Hummelgaard about the Danish flag.
143 dead in new flu-like illness in Congo-Kinshasa
In the past two weeks, 143 people have died in Congo-Kinshasa from what the authorities call an "unknown disease", reports Reuters. Those affected have had flu-like symptoms such as high fever, headache and cough.
A local politician calls the situation "extremely worrying" because the number of infected people continues to increase. According to a local epidemiologist, women and children are the most severely affected.
Since last week, WHO has been working together with the local authorities to find out what kind of disease it is.

The debate about e-cigarettes
Sources: The EU says yes to new smoking bans in the Union
On Tuesday, the EU countries' 27 health ministers will meet in Brussels, among other things to discuss tougher rules around smoking and vaping.
Sources tell the AFP news agency that a proposal to crack down on passive smoking through various types of bans in the Union will be approved. The issue is dividing the EU and as recently as last week the parliament voted against a similar proposal.
The proposal that is on the ministers' table today means in practice that all smoking, both cigarettes and e-cigarettes, is prohibited at swimming pools, beaches and outdoor restaurants.
Even if the new recommendations are approved, they are not binding. Member countries can decide on health policy themselves.
