Frozen Gazans Forced to Search for Food Scraps
Many Gazans are forced to search for food scraps at the dump to be able to eat their fill. This is what UNRWA spokesperson Louise Wateridge says in a clip on X.
- Here in Khan Yunis, there is a square kilometer garbage dump. Every day we see children, families and animals searching in it for food scraps to eat or combustible material to keep warm.
At the same time, many are struggling to stay warm in the winter weather, with cold, rain and only a few degrees above zero at night, writes AP.
There is a shortage of blankets, warm clothes and firewood, and the tents many of the residents live in are becoming increasingly worn out.
- We get scared every time we hear that it is going to rain and wind because our tents are lifting from the wind. We fear that strong winds will cause the tent to collapse, says Shadia Ayada, who only has a blanket and a hot water bottle for her eight children.
Nearly 30 dead in Israeli attacks in Gaza
28 people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes around Gaza overnight and Sunday morning, the Hamas-controlled Civil Defense in Gaza said, AFP reports.
In one of the attacks, which targeted a school building, eight people were killed, including four children. According to the Civil Defense, people fleeing had sought shelter in the school.
Israel has not commented specifically on the deadly attacks but says the air force targeted a school in northern Gaza. According to Israel, Hamas was using the school as a command center, TT reports.
