Political situation in Australia

The state leader: "Andravåg" with new laws awaits

The state leader of the Australian Queensland, David Crisafulli, says that even more tough laws must be introduced to overcome serious crime, ABC reports.

After the parliament in the state hammered out tougher penalties for young people, which, among other things, means that ten-year-olds can be sentenced to life in prison, Crisafulli says that a "second wave" of law changes awaits.

At a press conference, the state leader was asked if he has a backup plan in case the new laws do not have the desired effect.

- If things need to be strengthened, it will happen, he says, but emphasizes that he is "very sure" that the tougher penalties will help.

The new law: Ten-year-olds can be sentenced to prison

Parliament in the Australian state of Queensland has clubbed tougher punishments for children and young people. When the new laws come into force, children under the age of ten will be able to be punished in the same way as adults if they are convicted of, among other things, murder, reports the Australian ABC.

The tightened rules come after a major public debate about serious crimes committed by young people in the region. The LNP party, which took power in the state last autumn, went to the polls on tougher sentences for young people.

"These laws are for every Queenslander who has felt unsafe and fallen victim to youth crime in our state," said leader David Crisafulli after the parliamentary vote.
