The political situation in Norway

Resignation demands against Gahr Støre after declining numbers

Several top figures in the Norwegian governing party, the Labor Party, question Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre's future as party leader. This is stated by several sources for NRK.

The background to the smoldering dissatisfaction is falling opinion figures, which has led to lower support behind Gahr Støre.

Norwegian TV2 also has similar source information. According to the channel's sources, a change of power in the party could come as soon as just after Christmas. NRK's sources believe that Gahr Støre should leave before the party's national meeting in April.

Gahr Støre tells NRK that he does not feel that his position is threatened and that he plans to lead the party during the elections in September next year.

- I am motivated for the task.

Designated as successor: "Not relevant to challenge"

Norway's Labor and Integration Minister Tonje Brenna is singled out as the one who would take over both party leader and prime minister positions if Jonas Gahr Støre is forced to resign. This is written by several Norwegian media and refers to sources in the Labor Party.

Brenna, who is also deputy party leader, tells NRK that it is not relevant.

- It is not a current issue that I would in any way challenge Jonas Gahr Støre.

The internal dissatisfaction with Gahr Støre is said to have started a few weeks ago and is rooted in declining public opinion figures. In an opinion poll from TV2/Verian on Monday, the Labor Party received 16.5 percent.

- It is far, far too low. It is very bad, commented Gahr Støre at the time.

Heavy names in support of criticized Gahr Støre

Resignation demands have been raised against Norway's Prime Minister and the leader of the Labor Party Jonas Gahr Støre, according to anonymous sources to several Norwegian media. On Monday, when the news broke, it was conspicuously silent with public support from well-known party colleagues.

But during Tuesday, more and more big names joined his side. Among them are Labor and Integration Minister Tonje Brenna, who has been singled out as a possible successor, and LO chairman Peggy Hessen Følsvik, according to Aftenposten. Dagbladet reports that the youth association chairman Gaute Børstad Skjervø also expresses his support for Støre, as does former party leader and NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg.

According to the media, the demands for resignation have arisen after falling opinion figures.
