The war in Sudan

25 million threatened by famine in Sudan: "There is nothing to eat"

As many as 25 million people are threatened by acute famine in war-torn Sudan this year. That is what experts warn about, AP writes. The figure corresponds to over half of the country's total population.

In search of food, around 700 000 Sudanese have made their way to Chad. One of them is Awatif Adam, who moved to the neighboring country with his 6-year-old twin daughters and his three-year-old son.

- My children kept saying "mommy give us food", she tells AP.

23-year-old Aziza Abrahim has also been forced to flee several times. But it was neither the murder of her relatives nor the disappearance of her husband that made her finally go to Chad - it was hunger.

- We have nothing to eat because of the war.

Jan Egeland: Many people want to go to Europe

Many of the refugees who have managed to leave Sudan have their sights set on Europe. This is what Jan Egeland, director general at the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), tells TT. Egeland has recently been to Sudan where he met with regional rulers and civilian victims.

- I asked them if they plan to come back to Darfur [...]. They said their future is in Europe.

Egeland believes that it should be taken as a message to the governments in Sweden, Norway and Germany. If they want to avoid a larger migration, they must invest in humanitarian protection and aid to Sudan's victims.

- The warlords don't need more weapons, they need food and resources for the children, says Egeland.
