Russia expert: "The ball is in Zelensky's court"

There is a long way to peace in Ukraine.

And it may end with President Zelensky having to sacrifice his power.

- His worst obstacle is his own people and his own parliament, says Russia expert Malcolm Dixelius.

Today, a first meeting was held in Switzerland between the United States and Ukraine about Donald Trump's peace plan.

Afterwards, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was radiantly positive.

- I think we have probably had the most productive and meaningful meeting so far in the entire process since we became involved, he says according to CNN.

Ukraine's negotiator Andriy Yermak also said earlier in the day that great progress has been made and that they are moving towards a "just and sustainable peace".

The negotiations are to continue in the coming days. Trump has said that he thinks Zelensky should announce on Thursday whether he accepts the peace plan or not.

The expert: Then the fighting will stop

According to Russia expert Malcolm Dixelius, one should not expect a peace agreement to be in place on Thursday.

– No, I don't think so. But it will be so complete on Thursday that it is agreed that this is what will be agreed upon.

Trump's 28-point plan is a framework but lacks details, he says.

The next phase is detailed negotiations.

– It will be interesting to see how many parties will be involved in the detailed negotiations. I can imagine that others than Europe, the US and Russia will be involved. I am convinced that Turkey will be involved in one way or another. They are the real superpower in the Black Sea and have special interests when it comes to Crimea and so on.

Number three is the implementation of the agreement.

– I think that in 2026 the fighting will stop and there will be an external framework for negotiations. Then the detailed negotiations will come and we don't know how long they will last.

Zelenskyj main character

What is most crucial right now is how Ukraine chooses to act, says Dixelius.

– They can strike straight back, which would probably put them in a very difficult situation. But it is exactly as President Zelenskyj describes it: They have to choose between a degree of humiliation, which means taking a loss that allows Putin to at least partially declare victory. It is terrible for them, says Dixelius and continues:

- But if they do not do it, they risk what is worse. Losing their most important, most important ally and not being able to hold out as they have done.

In the end, it is Zelensky who is the main character, says Dixelius.

- Zelensky has the ball. But his worst obstacle is his own people and his own parliament. You have to remember that. Parliament is not with him when it comes to giving up land. The population will be disappointed. He will then sacrifice all his chances of being re-elected.
