The war in Sudan

RSF militia declares three-month unilateral ceasefire

The RSF militia in Sudan declares a unilateral ceasefire for three months, AFP reports. The Sudanese army has rejected a US proposal for a ceasefire, accusing it of serving the interests of the United Arab Emirates. The country is accused of supporting the RSF with weapons and fighters, but consistently denies the accusations.

Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan says in a video that the ceasefire proposal is unacceptable and would “eliminate” the army and security forces and allow the RSF militia to maintain its positions. According to him, a peace agreement must force the RSF completely out of the territories the militia captured during the war.

The war in Sudan — it’s about the matter

• The RSF paramilitary group took control of al-Fashir, the Sudanese army’s last stronghold in Darfur, at the end of October 2025, after an 18-month siege.
• The UN, the ICC and several researchers have reported mass murders, sexual violence and ethnic cleansing against civilians, where thousands are believed to have been killed and mass graves have been documented using satellite images.
• Refugees and aid organizations testify that tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee, many children are severely traumatized and hundreds of thousands of civilians are trapped in the city without access to food or healthcare.
• RSF has been accused of war crimes and genocide, and several leading commanders have been arrested by their own militia after international criticism and the dissemination of films showing abuses.
• The United Arab Emirates has been identified as the largest financier and source of weapons for RSF, which has led to demands for an arms embargo and a halt to Swedish and European arms exports to the country.
