Several Republicans demand investigation into Pretti's death
More and more Republicans are demanding an investigation into the immigration agency ICE and its working methods in Minnesota, reports the AP. Andrew Garbarino, Republican chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security, wants ICE and other agencies to be questioned in Congress.
According to the news agency, several Republican congressmen and governors have expressed concern about the situation after 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti was shot to death.
Donald Trump and several ministers were quick to accuse Pretti of being responsible for the incident. Films and images from the scene analyzed by media houses and experts contradict the image that the ICE agents who fired the shots acted in self-defense.
Republican Senator Bill Cassidy writes on X that confidence in ICE and the Department of Homeland Security is at stake.
Walz: Trump considering reducing the number of agents
In a conversation with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Donald Trump has reportedly agreed to consider reducing the number of federal agents in the state. The governor himself stated this in a statement via his office.
Walz says that the conversation was constructive and that the president has agreed to cooperate with the state in a "more coordinated manner". The presence of the immigration agency ICE in the state has led to major protests and two people have been shot dead by the agency's agents.
During the afternoon, the governor also wrote an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal in which he strongly attacks the crackdown on undocumented migrants.
"It is a campaign of organized brutality against the residents of our state," he writes.
