Republican candidate withdraws from gubernatorial race: "ICE is a disaster"
Chris Madel, one of the Republican candidates in the Minnesota gubernatorial race, is ending his campaign over the immigration agency ICE. In a long video on X, he launches a fierce attack on both the party and ICE's actions.
Madel is a lawyer and has previously offered to help Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent who shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis three weeks ago.
In the statement, Madel says that the administration's crackdown on undocumented immigrants in the state has gone too far. He calls ICE's presence a "complete disaster."
- I cannot support the Republicans' stated retaliation against the residents of our state, he says.
USA expert: Greatest risk of civil war in 60 years
The troubled situation in Minnesota has increased the risk of civil war in the USA, says USA expert Andreas Utterström. In an interview with TV4 Nyheterna, he says that the situation could escalate further.
– The risk of civil war has never been greater since the height of the civil rights movement in the 1960s.
Utterström emphasizes that the USA has been affected by similar tensions before and that they usually resolve themselves politically or legally. Something that risks increasing tensions is if the state police are instructed to stop federal police, in this case ICE agents, he says.
