Mozambique floods

Major floods in Mozambique: “Lost everything”

Aerial images show water as far as the eye can see. Mozambique has been hit by the worst floods in a generation, reports the BBC.

Tens of thousands of people have been rescued by boats from the rising waters. In total, at least 640,000 people have been affected by the floods since January 7. Twelve people have been confirmed dead, according to local authorities.

Many of those affected are farmers who work low-lying land.

“We lost everything in the water – houses, televisions, refrigerators, clothes and animals. Our farms are under water,” says 67-year-old rice farmer Francisco Fernando Chivindzi.

Authorities fear the situation could get worse due to heavy rains in neighboring South Africa, where the Inkomati River flows.

Crocodiles reach cities as water rises

It’s not just the advance of the water that worries residents of flood-stricken Mozambique, but also the creatures in it. Crocodiles have started to appear in several cities, Africa News reports.

When the water in rivers like the Limpopo rises and reaches more densely populated areas, the animals can also make their way there.

At least three people have been killed in crocodile attacks in the past month. Among them, a man was reportedly “swallowed” by a crocodile in Maputo province, local media report.
