Sopraset in the Philippines

Signs of life in the rubble after “avalanche of garbage”

Rescuers have discovered new signs of life in the “avalanche of garbage” that claimed at least four lives in the Philippines earlier this week, writes the New York Times.

More than 30 people are still missing after a mountain of garbage collapsed and fell over a block in Cebu City on Thursday. Twelve people have been rescued from the rubble so far.

According to the mayor of Cebu City, the work of finding the missing people is both difficult and dangerous. On Saturday, a special crane will be delivered to the scene of the accident that rescuers believe will facilitate the work.

Relatives have not given up hope of seeing again the at least 30 people who are believed to be trapped under a mountain of garbage in Cebu City in the Philippines. This is reported by the local television channel ABS-CBN.

“They say the people who are trapped are calling for help, so there is a possibility that my brother is still alive,” Cebu City resident Michelle Lumapas told the channel.

Twelve people have been rescued from the rubble. At least four have been confirmed dead.

Jaylord Antigua, 31, tells the AP how he made it to freedom after the mountain of garbage collapsed on Thursday.

“I saw a light and quickly crawled towards it because I was afraid of more collapses. It was traumatic. I thought it was the end, so this is my second life.
