A gigantic garbage dump has collapsed onto workers and buildings in Cebu in the central Philippines. Many are missing.

The garbage dump had been built as a small mountain on the northern outskirts of Cebu. Staff working with the garbage were nearby when the dump collapsed without warning on Thursday.

Dozens of people are listed as missing after the collapse, and a woman who was trapped under debris died on the way to hospital.

At least two dead after garbage dump collapse in the Philippines

At least one person has died and over 30 are missing after a garbage dump in the Philippines has collapsed, reports AP, among others.

Rescue workers have so far rescued 12 of the dump's employees from the rubble. A 22-year-old woman died on the way to the hospital. A 25-year-old engineer was also found dead later, according to the city's mayor.

"I saw a light and quickly crawled towards it because I was afraid it would collapse again. It was traumatic," Jaylord Antigua, who works in the dump's office, told the AP. The office was crushed by the collapse.

It is still unclear exactly what caused the dump to collapse, but one of the city's councilors has said it was likely due to improper waste management.
