Venezuela: “Large number” of prisoners to be released

A “large number” of prisoners are to be released from prisons in Venezuela. This was stated by Jorge Rodríguez, the speaker of the country’s parliament, on Thursday.

According to Rodríguez, who is the brother of interim president Delcy Rodríguez, both Venezuelan and international prisoners will be released. It is not clear how many.

The announcement comes after the United States captured President Nicolás Maduro in an attack on the night of January 3.

According to Foro Penal, a group that works for human rights, there are over 800 political prisoners in Venezuela, among them 175 military personnel.
