การบังคับให้หมอบคลานในไทย ทุกครั้งที่ข้าพเจ้าวิจารณ์การหมอบคลานของไทยข้าพเจ้าถูกวิจารณ์ก้าวร้าวอย่างรุณแรงจากคนไทยเป็นจำนวนมาก ที่อ้างว่าทุกประเทศมีประเพณีของตนเองและบอกว่าการหมอบคลานคือการแสดงถึงการเคารพอย่างหนึ่งของคนไทย เขาถือว่าการล้อเลียนการหมอบคลานเป็นการไม่เคารพต่อวัฒธรรมของไทย

เมื่อทีวีของเยอรมันถ่ายทอดประเด็นเรื่องจริงเกี่ยวกับราชินี นุ้ยต้องหมอบคลานอยู่ใต้เท้ากษัตริย์วชิราลงกรณ์สามีใหม่ของเธอเป็นการเปรียบเทียบให้ชาวโลกได้เห็นทางทีวีพวกคนไทยส่วนหนึ่งได้เขียนวิจารณ์ทางเวบไซย์อย่างบ้าคลั่งและลบวีดิโอนั้นทิ้ง โชคดีที่ข้าพเจ้าเก็บไว้ฉบับหนึ่ง

แต่พวกคนไทยที่คิดว่าการหมอบคลานไม่ได้เสียหายอะไรคือพวกที่ปฏิเสธประวัติศาสตร์และวัฒธรรม  การหมอบคลานเป็นการบังคับมนุษย์ให้ยอมจำนนต่อตนเองเป็นการแสดงตนที่อยู่เหนือผู้ที่ยอมจำนนและยอมแพ้เป็นการแสดงการดูถูกเหยียดหยามต่อมนุษย์ด้วยกัน

มันเป็นการสื่อสารอย่างชัดแจ้งถึงความไม่ยอมให้มนุษย์มีสิทธิเสมอภาคเท่าเทียมกันและไม่ให้ความเคารพในความเป็นศักดิ์ศรีของมนุษย์ทุกคนเท่าเทียมกัน มันเป็นพิธีกรรมของระบอบศักดินาและเผด็จการซึ่งพิธีกรรมเหล่านี้จะไม่มีพื้นที่อยู่ในระบอบของสังคมประชาธิปไตย
  
พันกว่าปีมาแล้วในทั่วโลกที่พวกชนชั้นสูงได้พยายามใช้พิธีกรรมหมอบคลานกับสามันชนและพันกว่าปีมาแล้วที่มนุษย์ได้ทำการต่อสู้เพื่อต่อต้านในการใช้พิธีกรรมเช่นนั้น

ในสมัยโบราณของเปอร์เชียมากกว่า 2500 ปีมาแล้ว การหมอบคลาน ( prostration ) เรียกว่า (proskynesis )  พวกสามัญชนต้องนอนลงกับพื้นบางครั้งถึงกับต้องจูบเท้าของพวกชนชั้นสูง ขณะเดียวกันในสมัยโบราณของกรีชถือเป็นเรื่องป่าเถื่อนไร้สาระ

ประมาณ 2300 มาแล้ว อเล็กซานเดอร์ ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ได้พยายามให้คนในอาณาจักรของเขาหมอบคลานให้กับเขาแต่ต้องเลิกล้มเพราะถูกต่อต้านจากกรีช , Callisthenes นักปรัชญาประจำศาลของเขาได้บอกเขาว่าการหมอบคลานจะยอมรับไม่ได้สำหรับผู้ที่อุทิศตนเพื่อเสรีภาพ

ประมาณ 1700 กว่าปีมาแล้วจักรพรรดิ์  Diocletian ได้ใช้ระบบหมอบคลานกับคนในอาณาจักรโรมัน  เพราะเขาต้องการทำตัวเสมือนพระเจ้าแทนการเป็นมนุษย์ธรรมดาเพื่อแสดงถึงการมีอำนาจและผู้ที่อยู่ใต้อำนาจจะต้องเชื่อฟังเขา

ในสมัยโบราณของฮาวายคนต้องหมอบคลานให้กับผู้เป็นหัวหน้าเกาะเขาจะถูกทำโทษถ้าขัดขืน  ในอาณาจักรจีนประชาชนต้องหมอบคลานต่อเจ้าหน้าที่ชั้นสูงของจีน ในประเทศญี่ปุ่นประชาชนต้องหมอบคลานต่อหน้าจักรพรรดิ์ หรือ พวกขุนนาง

ดังนั้นการหมอบตลานไม่ใช่เอกลักษณ์ของวัฒธรรมและประเพณีของไทยมันเป็นรูปแบบธรรมดาของการกดขี่ข่มเหงของมนุษยชาติที่่เป็นธรรมเนียมใช้มามานเป็นพันๆปีมาแล้ว

ในประเทศที่พัฒนาแล้วเมื่อแนวความคิดของมนุษยชาติในด้านความเสมอภาคของสิทธิมนุษยชนได้แผ่ขยายออกไปลัทธิการหมอบคลานก็หมดไป ประชาชนในทั่วโลกมองเห็นการหมอบคลานเป็นเรื่องโบราณดึกดำบรรพ์เป็นพิธีกรรมปฏิบัติที่หล้าหลังไร้ความหมายในเวลาปัจจุบัน 

กษัตริย์จุฬาลงกรณ์ ร. 5 ก็ยอมตกลงยกเลิกพิธีกรรมหมอบคลานในปี 1873 และกล่าวว่า  " พิธีกรรมหมอบคลานในประเทศไทยเป็นการกดขี่ข่มเห็งอย่างร้ายแรง " หลายประเทศได้ใช้ระบบหมอบคลานแต่เดี๋ยวนี้ได้ยกเลิกไปแล้ว

“สาเหตุเบื้องหลังเพื่อยอมรับถึงความจำเป็นในการสร้างความเท่าเทียมกันของกลุ่มชนต่างๆในสังคมใม่ให้มีการกดขี่ซึ่งกันและกัน ไม่ให้มีชนชั้นที่กดขี่ " จุฬาลงกรณ์พูด  " หลังจากมีการยกเลิกพิธีกรรมนี้แล้วประเทศเหล่านั้นก็เจริญขึ้นกว่าเดิมมาก

แต่พอมาถึงรัชกาลของกษัตริย์ภูมิพลลัทธิหมอบคลานก็ฟื้นกลับคืนมาอีกประเทศไทยเป็นประเทศเดียวในโลกที่ฟื้นฟูพิธีกรรมโบราณที่ยกเลิกไปแล้วคืนกลับมาใช้อีก เป็นเอกลักษณ์อันเดียวของไทยเกี่ยวกับพิธีกรรมหมอบคลานซึ่งไม่เป็นที่น่าภาคภูมิใจอะไรสำหรับคนไทย

ดังนั้น พิธีกรรมของการหมอบคลานไม่ใช่ "วัฒธรรมไทย" วัฒธรรมไทยคือ ศิลปกรรม ดนตรี วรรณกรรม สถาปนิค รวมทั้งอาหาร การดูถูกมนุษย์ชาติไม่ใช่ " วัฒธรรม " หรือ " ประเพณี " มันคือการกดขี่ข่มเหง.

A thread on prostration and Thailand. Every time I criticise prostration I get outraged comments from Thais who say all countries have their own customs, and prostration is just the Thai way of showing respect. They say mocking prostration is disrespecting Thai culture 1/15

When a German TV show mocked the fact that Queen Nui had to crawl at the feet of her new husband King Vajiralongkorn, the TV channel's website was overwhelmed with furious comments from Thais and eventually they removed the video. Luckily I kept a copy 2/15

But Thais who think that prostration is just a harmless Thai custom are just showing total ignorance of history and culture. Prostrating to another human being is an overt humiliating display of subjugation and submission. 3/15 

It sends a clear message that not everybody has the right to be treated with equal dignity and respect. It’s a ritual of feudalism and dictatorship that has no place in any democracy. 4/15 

For thousands of years, all over the world, powerful elites have tried to introduce prostration to subjugate commoners. And for thousands of years, people have been fighting back against this degrading ritual. 5/15 

In ancient Persia, more than 2,500 years ago, prostration was called proskynesis. Commoners lay on the ground and sometimes kissed the feet of people of high status. The ancient Greeks, meanwhile, thought the custom was ludicrous and barbaric. 6/15 

Around 2,300 years ago, Alexander the Great tried to force people in his empire to prostrate to him, but had to drop the idea due to opposition from the Greeks. His own court philosopher, Callisthenes, said prostration could never be acceptable to people "devoted to freedom” 7/15

Around 1,700 years ago, the emperor Diocletian enforced the practice of prostration in the Roman Empire. Historians say he introduced the ritual because he wanted to be regarded as a god, rather than an ordinary human being, to try to ensure the obedience of his subjects. 8/15  

In ancient Hawaii, people had to prostrate to chieftains and were executed if they refused. In Imperial China, people had to prostrate — kowtow — to senior officials. In Japan, prostration was known as dogeza and was expected when meeting the emperor or a feudal lord. 9/15 

So prostration is not some unique Thai cultural tradition. It’s a common form of subjugating other human beings that has been used in multiple cultures over thousands of years. 10/15 

But as countries developed, and the idea spread that all people deserve equal rights, the practice of prostration began to fade away. People around the world rightly saw it as a primitive and demeaning practice from the past that has no place in the present. 11/15 

King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, agreed. He outlawed prostration in 1873. “The practice of prostration in Siam is severely oppressive,” he said, in the past, many other countries had also insisted on prostration, but all had now abandoned the practice. 12/15 

“The reason behind this is that they acknowledged the necessity of rebuilding a more equal relationship between different groups in society — no more class oppression,” Chulalongkorn said. “Since the abolition, those countries have become more prosperous. 13/15

But during the reign of King Bhumibol, prostration was reintroduced. Thailand is the only country in the world to have resumed this outdated practice after it had already been abolished. That is the only thing uniquely Thai about prostration and it’s nothing to be proud of. 14/15

So prostration is not “Thai culture”. Thailand’s culture is its art, its music, its literature, its architecture, and of course its food. Humiliating other human beings is not "culture" or "tradition". It is oppression. 15/15
