Report: New record level for melting glaciers
Sea level rise and the melting of glaciers reached new record levels in 2022, according to a new report from the World Meteorological Organization WMO.
- The sea ice in Antarctica is at the lowest level that has been measured so far. In Europe, the melting of icebergs is at a sky-high level, says WMO director Petteri Taalas.
Statistics for measured global temperatures and other weather conditions go back to 1850.
In the report, the WMO assesses that this development will continue for thousands of years to come. Johan Rockström/drought in Spain. TT

Rockström: Kudos to the EU for maintaining climate leadership
The summer of 2022 was the hottest in Europe since measurements began, according to the EU's Earth observation program Copernicus annual report released yesterday.
- We will have a tough period with several decades of even more intense heat waves, droughts, floods, melting of glaciers, says Swedish climate scientist Johan Rockström in Morgonstudion.
The Paris Agreement's 1.5 degree target will be exceeded even according to the best scenarios, notes Rockström. His hope is that "by the end of the century" the world can start to come back towards one and a half degrees of warming compared to pre-industrial levels.
Rockström also comments on the large climate package that was given the green light by the EU Parliament this week. He praises the EU for maintaining global climate leadership despite war and inflation.
- Our leaders must be praised for that.
