Prince Joachim
After the tough fights over the royal titles, Prince Joachim and his family are moving to Washington this fall.
Now the prince risks losing the appanage.
If Parliament decides to stop the payments, the prince must earn his own money.
On May 4, the Folketing decides whether the prince will be allowed to keep his appanage or not. According to the Danish constitution, members of the royal family cannot decide for themselves whether they should be allowed to take the tax money with them if they move abroad.
Getting rid of the monopoly becomes noticeable in that case. The prince gets 3,866,792 Danish kroner in appanage per year. That is about 5.8 million Swedish kronor.

Got a top job in the US
In France, the prince has been allowed to keep the appanage, but it is not obvious that he will be allowed to do so in Washington.
Joachim has got a job as a defense industry attaché at the Danish embassy in Washington. The assignment runs over three years. In total, the prince has lived outside Denmark's borders for nearly six years.
The relationship between Prince Joachim and the rest of the family is complicated. When Queen Margrethe made the decision to remove the titles from Prince Joachim's children last fall, it came as a shock to the prince and his family.
- It's never fun to see your children being mistreated like that. They find themselves in a situation they don't understand, Joachim told B.T.

We are all in shock
- We are all confused by the decision. We are saddened and in shock. This comes like a bolt from the blue. The children feel left out. They cannot understand why their identity is being taken away from them, said Countess Alexandra.
According to Danish media, Prince Joachim's royal role has been systematically wound down since 2018. In an interview with B.T, Princess Marie revealed that the move to Paris in 2020 was more or less imposed by Queen Margrethe.
