Report: Gay British soldiers subjected to electric shocks in the 90s
The British Army ordered gay British soldiers and military personnel into conversion therapy to “cure” their sexual orientation as recently as the 1990s. It emerges from an audit commissioned by the British government with the aim of mapping homophobia in the British armed forces, reports Bloomberg, which has seen the as yet unpublished documents.
The report presents interviews from over a thousand people who testify about the use of electric shock treatments, extortion and sexual assault against homosexuals in the army between 1967 and 2000.
- I was sent to a psychiatrist in a hospital where they put electrodes on my head. They showed me pictures of men and evoked pleasurable feelings. Then they showed me pictures of women and gave me electric shocks, says an anonymous witness.
The Department of Defense has declined to comment on specific allegations in the report. A spokesperson for the British government writes in a statement that "we are proud of our LGBTQ+ veterans and are grateful for their service in defense of our nation".

Vucic leaves party leader post - but remains as president
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is stepping down as leader of the ruling SNS party after weeks of protests against his rule - but says he will continue in the role of president, writes Reuters.
During the ongoing party congress, he has nominated Defense Minister Milos Vucevic as the new party leader.
The opposition and human rights organizations have long criticized Vucic and the SNS for corruption, restrictions on the media, violence against the opposition and links to organized crime.
