The military junta in Burkina Faso is delaying promised elections
Ibrahim Traore, leader of Burkina Faso's military junta, is delaying the promised election and return to civilian rule after the weekend's deadly attacks in the country.
- We cannot organize elections without security. If we had a magic wand that allowed us to hold elections as soon as possible, we would have done it, he says according to AFP.
The junta took over last year, and has previously promised a return to democracy and free presidential elections by the summer of 2024.
Since 2015, jihadist groups with links to IS and al-Qaeda have taken over 40 percent of the country's territory. At least 10,000 people have been killed and around two million forced to flee.
