Biden calls around to secure support: "It feels good"
The White House and Republican leadership are lobbying to win support for the debt ceiling deal from the more hawkish factions in Congress, including defense hawks and climate advocates. Bloomberg reports. A handful of conservative Republican lawmakers have announced they will vote no, according to Reuters.
On Monday, President Joe Biden personally called around to members of Congress. According to Reuters, he feels confident that he will win support for the settlement.
- It feels very good. It will show when the voting starts, he says.
Republican Rep. Dusty Johnson is also optimistic after speaking with a dozen or so party colleagues.
- It will absolutely be voted through, there is no doubt about that.
State bankruptcy threatens on Monday, so time is short. The House of Representatives can only vote on the agreement on Wednesday. After that, it may take a few more days before the Senate can take a position on the proposal.

The British government calls for a price meeting with food giants
The UK government has called a meeting with representatives of the country's food giants to discuss the high food prices, British media reports. However, a state-initiated price ceiling is not in the plans - despite previous information, sources tell the BBC, among others.
Health Minister Steve Barclay tells the BBC program "Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg" that the meeting is about "having constructive discussions with food businesses about how we should work together, not about any coercive measures".
