Russia closes Swedish consulate as revenge - and expels five diplomats  

 

Russia expels five Swedish diplomats, states the state news agency Tass, writes Reuters. 

 

Tass reports that Russia is simultaneously shutting down the entire Swedish consulate in Saint Petersburg and the consulate general in Gothenburg. Sweden's ambassador has also been summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

 

It is stated that it is a reaction to the expulsion of five Russian diplomats in Sweden from last month. The relationship between the countries is at an "unprecedented level", according to the Russian government.

The Wagner group leaves Bachmut – the army takes over  

 

The Wagner group states that it is handing over its positions in Bachmut to the Russian army, AFP reports.  

 

The paramilitary group's leader Yevgeny Prigozhin posted a video on Telegram saying that his soldiers have already started to leave the city and that Russian soldiers will come to replace them.  

 

Yesterday, Prigozhin stated that 20,000 Wagner soldiers have died in the fighting for Bachmut in eastern Ukraine.  

 

The group claims to control the city, but according to Ukraine, fighting continues on the outskirts of the city.

Ukraine was probably behind the averted drone attack on the Kremlin. This is stated by the New York Times, which refers to American intelligence information that the newspaper has received.  

 

According to the information, the attack may have been orchestrated by Ukraine's intelligence service or by the country's special forces. After the incident, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied involvement. 

 

In the past, Russia has accused Ukraine of the May 3 attack. It has been claimed that it was an attempt to assassinate President Vladimir Putin. The American think tank ISW has stated that it is the Russians themselves who staged the drone attack.
