Scientists: Everyday chemicals damage fertility

Scientists warn that chemicals in everyday products may be a contributing factor to the global decline in fertility, writes the Wall Street Journal.

A growing number of scientific studies indicate that exposure to even small amounts of endocrine-disrupting chemicals has potentially negative effects on both the male and female reproductive systems.

- We have all kinds of evidence to suggest that we have serious problems here, says Patricia Hunt, professor of molecular biosciences at Washington State University.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can be found in a wide range of products, such as plastic packaging, toys and make-up. How large amounts are required for it to be harmful to health is hotly debated in the scientific world.

74-year-old sentenced to life for 29-year-old's murder

A 74-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Italy for the murder of 21-year-old Sargonia Dankha from Linköping, reports Aftonbladet.

Sargonia disappeared on November 13, 1995, but her body has never been found. Suspicions were quickly directed at the now convicted 74-year-old, who at the time had a relationship with Sargonia. Despite the fact that her blood was found in the man's apartment and in his car, he has never been able to be prosecuted in Sweden.

Sargonia's family chose to take the case further to Italy, where the man has now been sentenced.
 
Tourists to hospital - drank drinks in hotels in Fiji

Seven tourists are being treated in hospital in Fiji after suspected alcohol poisoning at a five-star hotel, AFP reports. All are believed to have had drinks at the Warwick Fiji hotel on Saturday night and shortly afterwards began to feel ill, vomited and developed neurological symptoms.

Among those infected are four Australians aged 18 to 56, one American and two other people whose nationalities are not known. Their injuries are considered serious.

Australian authorities urge tourists to be aware of the risks of methanol poisoning when consuming alcoholic beverages in Fiji, writes the BBC.
