Emissions from tourists are increasing: "We are increasing our travel"
Carbon
dioxide emissions from global tourism are increasing more than
emissions from other sectors, according to a new study published in
Nature. Flights to and from destinations and traveling on site are
singled out as the main reasons, writes TT.
Between 2009 and
2019, the percentage of emissions has doubled and tourism today accounts
for around 8.8 percent of the total emissions in the world.
- We
in countries that have traveled a lot for a long time are increasing
our travel. In addition, travel is increasing in other countries such as
China and India, says Stefan Gössling, professor of tourism science at
Linnaeus University, who has been involved in conducting the study.
Climate threat EU policy
EU chief: The climate threat must become a profitable business
EU
Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra is determined to build a bridge
between the climate and profitable business. In an interview with
Politico, he points out, among other things, the importance of
predictability and long-term rules of the game.
- Heavy
industries have very long investment cycles, sometimes decades, and get
no help from politicians who make a habit of constantly changing their
minds, he says.
One of the key issues for Hoekstra is to
challenge China and the US by building competitiveness within the EU for
green technology. Among other things, a carbon dioxide tax is planned
for importers of emission-intensive goods, which has been criticized by
several countries outside the Union.
