The elections in Romania

Social democratic SPD becomes largest in Romania

Now 99.7 percent of the votes in Romania's parliamentary elections have been counted and it is clear that the social democratic SPD will become the largest party, writes Reuters. They get just over 22 percent of the votes, and the election result likely means that an EU- and NATO-friendly center coalition will gain power in the country.

- We want a coalition that will continue Romania's European course, says the party's deputy leader Victor Negrescu to the television channel Stirile Pro.

Right-wing nationalist AUR becomes the second largest party with around 18 percent of the vote.

It is still unclear who will be allowed to form a government. It is mainly influenced by who wins the ongoing presidential election because it is the president who appoints the prime minister.

The far-right SOS wants to see a nationalist government

The far-right SOS gets about 7.8 percent in the Romanian parliamentary election. In total, the far-right parties received around 30 percent of the votes and now SOS leader Diana Sosoaca is appealing for unity, according to Reuters.

- I call on all patriotic and nationalist forces to join together and form a nationalist government, even a minority government, she says according to the TV channel Digi 24.

Who gets to form a government depends on who wins the ongoing presidential election. If the far-right candidate Calin Georgescu takes power and thus appoints a prime minister, SOS and the other far-right parties may have a chance to form a government.
