The fight against tuberculosis

India may miss out on eradicating TB by 2025

India may be about to fail in its stated promise to eradicate tuberculosis in the country by 2025. The South China Morning Post writes.

More than 2.5 million people are affected by the disease in India every year. That is more than a quarter of the total cases of the disease in the world.

In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to eradicate the disease by 2025, but experts now say things look bleak. This is not least due to the fact that the disease is linked to tobacco use - something that is widespread in the most vulnerable part of the population.

According to the WHO's latest tuberculosis report, the number of cases of the disease has fallen by between six and nine percent in India since 2013. Doctor Ramya Ananthakrishnan of the aid organization Reach, is nevertheless positive.

- Even if we don't make it next year, we can do it in a few years, he says.

Got tuberculosis - asked to sacrifice a goat

The spread of TB has decreased in five Indian states during 2024, writes the Times of India. Anupriya Patel, Minister of Health and Welfare, believes that the government's special 100-day effort against the disease has had an effect. At the same time, sufferers warn that there is a stigma around the disease.

A 24-year-old woman told the South China Morning Post that her family distanced themselves from her when she became ill. Instead of helping her get treatment, they encouraged her to turn to alternative treatments.

- I have undergone so many rituals. Sacrificed a goat, chanted mantras, wore special garlands and ate neem leaves. Some even suggested I just drink lime juice because I was possessed by a ghost.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to eradicate tuberculosis by 2025, something experts say is unlikely.
