Russian forces approach Pokrovsk: "Fierce fighting"
Russian forces are only three kilometers from the strategically important Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk, Reuters reports. On Wednesday, the Ukrainian military announced that Russia had taken or destroyed several new positions in the area.
Fighting outside Pokrovsk has been going on for months. If the city were to fall, it would mean the biggest military setback in months, according to Reuters. Among other things, Pokrovsk is an important logistics center for the Ukrainian soldiers.
Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky recently visited the region and says in a statement that Ukrainian defenses must be strengthened there.
"The battles are exceptionally fierce," he writes on Facebook.

Details: Russian column heading towards Zaporizhzhya
A column of Russian military vehicles is moving north across the Crimean Peninsula, according to a map by the Ukrainian resistance movement Atesh, according to the Kyiv Independent.
According to the movement, the final destination is likely to be the partially occupied region of Zaporizhzhya, where an escalation of an ongoing Russian offensive is being prepared.
"All the information we collected has already been passed on as planned. We know where and how to stop this equipment from reaching the mainland of Ukraine," states Atesh on Telegram.
In an earlier interview, however, the Kyiv Independent warned a head of Ukraine's Security and Defense Council that Russia will increase its offensive in Zaporizhzhya and Kherson in order to improve its negotiating position.
Kremlin: Orbán proposed "Christmas peace" in Ukraine - we said yes
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has proposed a "Christmas peace" in the fighting between Russia and Ukraine, AFP reports.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the proposal included a ceasefire and a larger prisoner exchange, to which Russia was positive. According to Peskov, the proposal was forwarded to Ukraine, which, however, immediately refused.
Russia started the war with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Ukraine has yet to publicly comment on the proposal.
The outside world's response
Tusk: There are no plans for a peacekeeping force in Ukraine
Ukraine's government is positive about the idea of a European peacekeeping force in the country after the end of the war, sources told AFP.
- Putin always breaks the truce, he has done it many times, not only in Ukraine. That is why we need guarantees, and military presence can be one, a senior Ukrainian official told the news agency.
At the same time, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk dismisses "speculations" that Poland and France are planning just this, writes Reuters.
- On behalf of Poland, such a decision will be made in Warsaw and only in Warsaw. At the moment we are not planning any such action, he says.
On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron visited Warsaw to meet Tusk and, among other things, discuss the war in Ukraine.
