Frederiksen: "Now everyone can have a little ice in their stomachs"
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen cannot imagine Donald Trump making his threats of military or economic pressure on Denmark a reality, she tells Danish TV2.
The way forward in the Greenland issue will be discussed between the Danish and American governments, not in the media, she says, adding:
- Now I want to urge everyone to have a little ice in their stomachs.
Frederiksen also says that she does not want a trade war with the United States, and that it is not a good way forward to take economic punitive measures against each other.
She is guarding the strong Danish-American relationship, but emphasizes that the discussion must be conducted with respect for the Greenlandic people.
Trump does not rule out military pressure on Denmark
Donald Trump answers no when asked if he rules out economic or military pressure to seize Greenland and the Panama Canal. This is reported by Danish media.
– We need them for economic security, so I can’t rule out that we will do something, says the future president.
He opens up, among other things, for punitive tariffs on Denmark, and questions whether the country has a “legal right” to Greenland.
The statements were made during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. Trump also added that he wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, according to CNN.
Prime Minister: Our future is our business
Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede has commented on the heated discussion about the territory’s future in a new Facebook post.
“Let me repeat: Greenland belongs to the Greenlandic people. Our future and fight for independence is our business,” he writes.
Danes and Americans are entitled to their opinions, but Greenlanders should not let themselves be influenced by “hysteria and external pressure,” the minister continues.
He adds that he spends every day working for an independent Greenland.
