30 dead, 60 injured after panic at festival

The death toll is rising in India after the mass panic that broke out at the religious festival Kumbh Mela. At least 30 people have died and 90 have been injured, police said according to AFP.

Panic broke out at the festival as tens of thousands of pilgrims rushed to take a holy dip in the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswato rivers.

Around 400 million people are expected to travel from across India over the next six weeks to take a holy dip.

Panic during holy dip in India – at least 15 dead

At least 15 people are feared dead and many more injured in a stampede during the religious festival Kumbh Mela, a doctor told AFP.

It was when tens of thousands of pilgrims rushed to take a holy dip in the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswato rivers that panic broke out at the site.

Pilgrims from all over India travel to the river to take a holy dip. Over the next six weeks, authorities expect more than 400 million people to throng the site.
