Political situation in France
French left leaves budget talks
The Socialist Party in France has left budget talks in protest at what they call a racist statement by Prime Minister Francois Bayrou.
Bayrou has said that “it feels as if France has been hit by a tidal wave of immigrants”.
The minority government needs the support of the Socialist Party to have any chance of passing a budget vote. Earlier in January, the Socialists saved Bayrou in a vote of no confidence – in conflict with their allies the Greens and the more radical left party Occupied France.
At the time, Bayrou had promised the Socialists to dismantle parts of President Emmanuel Macron’s unpopular increase in the retirement age.
“This time it will be necessary to do more than make concessions in the budget,” Laurent Bamuel, a member of the Socialist Party, told Politico.

von der Leyen: EU cuts rules – not climate work
The EU's new plans to simplify rules for companies will not weaken climate work, whose goals are "set in stone". This is what Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says, according to Reuters.
- The goal remains the same, but we want to achieve it faster and better. And to do that, we must reduce complexity.
Starting next month, the EU will, among other things, require less extensive reporting from companies on how they comply with sustainability rules.

Syria's new demands on Russia: Give us Assad
A Russian delegation has held "direct" talks with the new regime in Syria, Reuters reports.
Russia has stressed that it is determined to keep its two military bases in the country, a naval base and an air base. A Syrian source tells the news agency that Syria, in turn, is demanding that Russia extradite former dictator Bashar al-Assad.
Assad was helped by the Kremlin to flee the country when rebel forces took over Damascus and is said to have been granted asylum in Moscow.
Syrian news agency Sana reports that the new regime wants Russia to rebuild its relationship with the country through “compensation, reconstruction and rebuilding.”
Russia has not commented on Syria’s demands.

Stranded astronaut duo
Trump asks Musk for help to “go and get” astronauts
US President Donald Trump has asked Space X founder Elon Musk to “go and get” the two astronauts who were “virtually abandoned in space,” he writes on Truth Social.
“Elon will be on his way soon. Hopefully everything goes well. Good luck, Elon!!!” he writes.
Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams were supposed to return in June, but their return has been delayed several times. Space X launched a vehicle last fall to bring the astronauts home, with the plan to bring them home in March.
