Roof collapse in Serbia

After the protests: Serbian Prime Minister resigns

Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic is resigning. He announced this at a press conference, several media outlets report.

The background is the recent massive protests against the country's government, in the wake of the deadly roof collapse at a train station.

It was in early November that the roof of a newly renovated train station collapsed and 15 people died. The incident led to corruption allegations and demands for Vucevic's resignation.

Vucevic says he hopes his resignation will reduce tensions in the country.

- It is my appeal that everyone calm down and return to dialogue, Vucevic says at the press conference, AP writes.

Major demonstrations in Belgrade - thousands on the streets

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the Serbian capital Belgrade to protest, The Guardian reports.

It is the latest in a series of demonstrations to block the infrastructure construction of a road junction in the city.

The reason is the serious accident in the city of Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, when a roof collapsed. Fifteen people died. The construction work was criticized for corruption and taking shortcuts, which the protesters say led to the disaster.

Supported by Belgrade residents and farmers, the student protests are now putting increasing pressure on President Aleksandar Vučić to act.
