The change of power in the US

Border policy in the US
3,500 migrants arrested during Trump's first week

Since Donald Trump took office as president a week ago, the federal immigration agency, Ice, has arrested over 3,500 people suspected of being in the US illegally. This is reported by Axios.

The largest number of arrests was made yesterday, when 1,179 people were arrested in one day.

The Wall Street Journal writes that the number of arrests has increased and increased every day during Trump's few days in power so far. Before the election in November, Trump promised to carry out the largest deportation in American history.

The promise has created concern among migrants in the US.

"Border czar" critical of Selena Gomez's tears

The artist and actor Selena Gomez published a video on Instagram in which she tearfully talked about the mass deportation of migrants that Donald Trump has begun as the new president.

– I wish there was something I could do but there isn’t. I don’t know what to do, says Gomez, who is of Mexican origin.

Later, Gomez posted a new video with the text “apparently it’s not okay to show empathy for people”.

One of the people who is critical of Gomez’s statements is Tom Homan, head of the US Border Patrol, a role usually called “border czar”. In an interview with Fox News, he wonders where Gomez’s tears for all those who have fallen victim to crime and human smuggling are.

– We will carry out this operation without apologizing, he says.

Trump’s tariffs
Migrant flight has landed in Colombia after the big fight

A plane with Colombian migrants who were deported from the US has now landed in Colombia after the weekend’s big fight between the country’s President Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump, Reuters reports.

After both countries threatened to impose high punitive tariffs, Petro and the US reached an agreement. On X, Petro writes that the people who have now landed in Colombia are “free.”

“Migrants are not criminals, but people who want to work, develop and live life,” he writes.
