Palestinians allowed to return to northern Gaza
Palestinians are allowed to return to northern Gaza for the first time in over a year, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement, writes AP. In return, Hamas will release six more hostages this week.
Reporters from the news agency saw on Monday morning how several people crossed the so-called Netzarim corridor, which separates northern Gaza from the southern part.
The return was delayed after the parties got into a dispute over the order in which the hostages would be released. About a million people fled to southern Gaza after the outbreak of war in October 2023 and have not been allowed to return since then.
Israel: Eight of the hostages to be released are dead
Eight of the 33 Israeli hostages who were supposed to be released by Hamas in accordance with the ceasefire agreement are dead, several media outlets report. A spokesman for the Israeli government says 25 of the 33 hostages who were part of the deal are alive.
A total of seven Israeli hostages have already been released in exchange for Palestinians held in Israel. Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that a total of six hostages will be released this week.
Three more hostages to be released this week
In exchange for Israel allowing Palestinians to return to northern Gaza, Hamas will release three more Israeli hostages this week, in addition to the three already included in the original deal. This is reported by several media outlets.
The first three will be released on Thursday and the remaining three on Saturday. Thursday's release includes an unnamed male hostage, female soldier Agam Berger, and civilian Arbel Yehoud, who was originally scheduled to be released on Saturday.
Over the weekend, both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement after a dispute over the order in which hostages should be released.
It is unclear which of the hostages will be released on Saturday.
