Quick version
US stock markets fell sharply, with the technology index Nasdaq down 3.1
percent, as a result of concerns about the Chinese chatbot Deepseek and
its impact on the market.
Nvidia's shares fell by 17 percent, which meant a historic stock market
value drop equivalent to approximately SEK 6,000 billion.
Deepseek is praised for its cost-effectiveness compared to competitors,
but has also shown certain limitations, for example in discussing
sensitive topics such as Tiananmen Square.
US stock markets closed in the red on Monday evening.
Technology giant Nvidia fell by 17 percent after fears about the new, cheaper Chinese chatbot Deepseek.
– It should be a wake-up call for our industries that we have to have laser focus on being competitive, says Donald Trump according to NBC.
Trump praises Chinese AI model
The AI tool Deepseek became the most popular app in Apple's App store this weekend.
Deepseek's chatbot is described by some as being at least as good as Open AI's Chat GPT. The big difference is the much lower production cost and that Deepseek requires fewer advanced computer chips.
This caused chip manufacturer Nvidia to appear on the stock exchange along with other technology companies that dragged the American market down on Monday. The technology-heavy Nasdaq index fell 3.1 percent.
– It puts the entire tech sector to the test, said Avanza's private economist Felicia Schön to Aftonbladet on Monday.

Nvidia's 17 percent decline was equivalent to about 6,000 billion kronor, which is the largest single stock market loss on Wall Street in history.
However, Donald Trump sees the rise of a low-cost model as "a very positive development".
- Instead of spending billions and billions, they will spend less and hopefully come up with the same solution, he says according to NBC.

Did not want to talk about Tiananmen Square
When the New York Times tested the new Deepseek, the newspaper reports that it performed as well as American competitors in some areas. But then the chatbot was asked to summarize the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing in 1989. According to the newspaper, Deepseek replied that it was "outside my current scope" and then "let's talk about something else".
Whether the AI concerns will cause the shares of the booming American technology companies to fall even further or whether it was just a short-term reaction remains to be seen.
American technology giant Nvidia fell sharply on Wall Street after the upstart's mega-success.
The new free AI tool Deepseek has hit like a bomb.
The Chinese chatbot challenges Open Ai's Chat GPT and caused the technology giant Nvidia to crash historically on the stock market.
Here are 5 points about Deepseek.
1. This is Deepseek
The new AI model Deepseek R1 was launched in January and their new app quickly became the most downloaded on the App store during a weekend.
On its website, the company writes that Deepseek R1 can already compete with one of Open AI's latest models, o1, a development of Chat GPT that is supposed to be able to "think for itself" more before responding.
2. How it works
The Chinese AI tool works in the same way as Chat GPT, for example. The user enters their request and Deepseek responds by generating text and can help the user with everything from searching for information, formulating an email, or solving complex problems.
3. Why the stock market fell
The American semiconductor giant Nvidia
is the market leader when it comes to advanced computer chips required in various AI solutions. In the summer of 2024, the company reached the highest company valuation in the world.
Deepseek has built its AI tool using cheaper and simpler chips, which caused the market to react strongly. Nvidia's stock fell by almost 17 percent in value on Monday, dragging several other American tech companies down with it.
4. Reportedly censoring criticism of China
On the same day as the stock market crash, the NY Times published its first impressions after testing Deepseek.
According to the newspaper, the AI chatbot performed as well as, for example, Chat GPT in some areas and a little worse in others. But when Deepseek was asked to summarize the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing in 1989, it reportedly replied that it was “outside my current scope” and then “let’s talk about something else”.
DN also writes that Taiwan is not an independent country if you ask Deepseek.
5. Problems with registration and cyberattacks
The company reported on Monday that it had been subjected to extensive cyberattacks, which forced Deepseek to limit the number of new user registrations. Also on Tuesday, users experienced the same problems with registering new accounts.
