New elections in Germany

Analysis: “Friedrich Merz is playing with fire”

CDU leader Friedrich Merz is playing with fire by presenting proposals to tighten Germany’s migration policy, writes Pitt von Bebenburg in an analysis in Frankfurter Rundschau. The conservative Christian Democratic opposition leader, who is the favorite to form a new German government after the election, also claims that he does not want to cooperate with the far-right AfD party.

“This is a dangerous political game during the election campaign,” writes von Bebenburg.

Merz is strengthening the AfD, a party he is trying to fight, and at the same time undermining the “firewall” against the far-right that he claims to want to defend, says von Bebenburg.

Heike Anger at Handelsblatt is on the same page. She believes that the CDU and its sister party the CSU are now shaking the “firewall” that is supposed to prevent parties from cooperating with the AfD.

Anger writes that the debate on migration policy in Germany is driven by emotions. Merz has recognized this and used it wisely, she writes.

However, due to legal obstacles, it may be difficult for Merz to get his proposal through, which could lead to further dissatisfaction among Germans.

“This could in turn give the AfD additional support.”
