Border Policy in the US
American Family Arrested – Spoke Spanish in Store
A child and his mother and grandmother were arrested by federal immigration authorities while speaking Spanish in a grocery store in Milwaukee, USA. Only when the Puerto Rican family was taken to the detention center in a police bus were they allowed to show their American passports. This is reported by the Puerto Rican television channel Telemundo, which interviewed a family member.
Puerto Rico is a self-governing territory where the mostly Spanish-speaking residents become US citizens at birth. Within that group, and among other Spanish-speaking Americans, there is now growing concern about the checks on suspected migrants.
The family in Milwaukee received an apology, but no compensation. They had to call a taxi to go back and pick up their car at the department store, according to Telemundo.
In two days, federal immigration authorities have arrested 2,000 people suspected of being in the US illegally, according to Axios.

Deported Sara: “It feels dangerous in the US now”
Undocumented Sara Tot-Botoz was arrested in Alabama while shopping with her granddaughter for not having a child seat in the car. It was then discovered that she was undocumented, and she has now been flown to Guatemala as part of Donald Trump's mass deportation, writes CNN.
Together with several other migrants, they were flown out on military planes after having lived in the US for decades. The vast majority were arrested during Joe Biden's presidency, but were deported in high-profile ways after Trump wanted to deliver on one of his campaign promises.
“It feels dangerous to be in the US now,” she says, adding that she just wants to go home to her hometown and never leave it again.
A week after Trump took office, the federal immigration agency had arrested over 3,500 people suspected of being in the US illegally, according to Axios.

Trump Sends Illegal Migrants to Guantanamo
US President Donald Trump intends to send 30,000 illegal migrants to the US military base at Guantanamo in Cuba. He said this on Wednesday, AFP reports. He will sign the order to the Department of Defense today.
A new detention center for the deported migrants is to be built on the base, according to plans. It has been used by the US since 2002 as a prison for suspected terrorists.
The Trump administration has already begun to fulfill its campaign promise of mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. In two days, the federal immigration agency has arrested 2,000 people suspected of being in the US illegally, according to Axios.
