The change of power in the US

Trump is strengthening US defenses – to create an American version of the "Iron Dome"

Donald Trump will sign a presidential order today that will mean that the US will build a "next-generation" air defense that will protect the country from, among other things, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. This is reported by American media.

Trump wants to create an American version of Israel's advanced air defense system, which goes by the name "Iron Dome". The US itself has been involved in financing the Israeli air defense system.

A document from the White House states that various types of missile attacks against the US pose a "catastrophic threat". It is not clear how much the project would cost or what the timeframe is.

The US already has several different air defense systems and previous presidents have also tried to modernize and upgrade the US defense.

Attorney General fires employees who participated in investigations against Trump

Officials who participated in two investigations against Donald Trump are being fired from the Justice Department, US media report. It is the new Attorney General James McHenry who is said to have informed the employees.

McHenry states that he "does not trust these officials to help reliably implement the president's agenda", according to the Washington Post.

It is unclear how many are being fired, but they can all be linked to the two investigations that special counsel Jack Smith launched into Trump's handling of classified documents and his attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Both cases led to indictments that were dropped after Trump's election victory.

Prosecutors Launch Review of Justice Department

Donald Trump's top ally, Attorney General Ed Martin, has launched an internal review of the US Justice Department's decision to indict hundreds for obstruction of justice after the storming of the Capitol, sources told the Wall Street Journal and CNN.

Ed Martin has requested files, documents and other information about the cases. Last year, the US Supreme Court ruled that prosecutors exceeded their authority when they tried to prosecute rioters for trying to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election.

Justice Department officials have consistently maintained that the charges were not politically motivated.

Canada: Countries Threatened by Trump Should Form Coalition

Canadian politician Chrystia Freeland, who has been tipped as a possible successor to Justin Trudeau, has come up with a plan for how the country will "stand up to Trump." This is reported by CBC and The Globe and Mail.

She urges the government to take a tough stance against the US and to publish a list of countermeasures that Canada could introduce if Trump makes good on his threat of punitive tariffs.

Freeland also wants countries threatened by Trump to form a “coalition”. Leaders from Mexico, Panama, Denmark and the EU should be included, she believes.

Sources: Netanyahu to travel to the US next week

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to travel to the US next week to meet with new US President Donald Trump at the White House, writes Axios.

If the meeting in Washington takes place, Netanyahu would be the first foreign leader to be invited to the White House after Trump’s return.

On Wednesday, Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Israel to meet with Netanyahu, among other things to talk about the ongoing ceasefire in Gaza.
