The battles
Swedish weapons from World War II on the war front

Older Swedish weapons are being used on the Ukrainian front in the war against Russia, writes SVT Nyheter. In addition to the new modern war material, Sweden has also sent weapons that were manufactured during World War II.

– They are incredibly functional weapons, says Major Roger Djupsjö.

During World War II, there was an idea that even soldiers with little training should be able to use the weapons quickly despite being tired and scared. According to Andreas Ohlsson, weapons inspector at the Army Museum, this is the reason why the older weapons are popular.

Russia: Nuclear power plant targeted in drone attack

Russia says it shot down more than 100 Ukrainian drones in over eleven regions last night, several international news agencies report.

Several of the drones damaged buildings. One person is said to have been injured, according to Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

“A total of 104 unmanned Ukrainian drones were shot down and destroyed by air defense systems last night,” the Russian Defense Ministry wrote on Telegram.

Russian media and authorities reported that the Smolensk nuclear power plant was one of the targets in the night’s attack. This information has not been confirmed elsewhere. The power plant has not been damaged and is operating as usual, according to Russian state media RIA.

The Ukrainian military, for its part, reported that Russia carried out a similar drone attack during the night.

The governor of Odessa reported that port infrastructure was targeted in the attack and that several buildings were damaged, AFP reported.

Sanctions
EU considers sanctions against Russian aluminum

The European Union is proposing that sanctions against Russia should also include aluminum, writes Bloomberg.

If the sanctions are approved by member states, European companies will be allowed to import the raw material under a quota system for the next year before it is banned completely.

The 16th sanctions package also includes around 15 banks and more than 70 ships in the so-called Russian shadow fleet.
