Reports: US approves new arms package for Israel

US President Joe Biden has submitted a proposal to Congress for a new arms deal with Israel worth eight billion dollars. This is reported by two sources to Axios, writes TT.

It concerns, among other things, ammunition, fighter jets, artillery pieces and attack helicopters and aims to "support Israel's long-term security".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously insinuated that Biden has imposed a "hidden" arms embargo on the country.

According to the information, several of the weapons will not be delivered for several years.

German concern after no handshake: "Not good"

The leader of the new regime in Syria refused to shake hands with Anna Baerbock during the German Foreign Minister's visit to Damascus on Friday, writes Politico. When they met, Syria's de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa chose to place his hand on his chest instead.

Baerbock says it was expected that there would be no "usual handshakes". Al-Sharaa did, however, extend his hand to France's Jean-Noël Barrot, who seemingly reluctantly took the Syrian leader's hand with a couple of fingers.

The incident has attracted attention in Germany, writes DN. German experts are critical and express concern about the direction Syria will take under the new Islamist rule.

- This is not good, says Volker Perthes at the German think tank Foundation for Science and Politics.
