Political situation in Kenya

President warns against “abuse” of social media

Kenyan President William Ruto is warning critics against “abuse” of social media, claiming that it risks “undermining the moral foundation of the country”, reports the Nation.

The statement comes after months of protests against Ruto and his government, and allegations that opposition figures are being abducted by police without trial.

Among the 82 people who have disappeared since June are two people who shared an AI-generated image of the president lying in a coffin.

“It is important to remember that every right has its limitations and that the safety of the population will always outweigh the demand for unrestrained freedom,” says Ruto.

The father: Who took my son – and where is he?

The father of one of the many young people believed to have been kidnapped in Kenya since the summer testified in a Kenyan court today, reports The Standard.

Gerald Karicha says his son had been shadowed by a mysterious car for days before he was attacked and abducted outside a barbershop.

The father also says he had expected to see his son when he received the summons to court. However, his son is not said to have been present. It was also not made clear what he is accused of.

“Who took my son and where is my son? When I look around the courtroom, I can’t see my son. I thought he would be here,” says Karicha.

The opposition and international aid organizations have accused the police of abducting government critics without formal suspicion. The government has denied the allegations.
