Political situation in Venezuela

Opposition leader appears – arrested and released

On Thursday, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado joined the protests against President Nicolás Maduro in the capital Caracas, several media outlets reported.

“Today, all of Venezuela is out on the streets! We are not afraid!” she shouted to the crowd from the back of a truck, waving a flag.

Shortly afterwards, she was arrested by government forces, according to her team. Just an hour later, she was released again.

Corina Machado had been in hiding since the election at the end of July. Her arrest comes the day before Maduro, who the opposition and much of the world say cheated his way to victory, is sworn in for a third term.

Thousands demonstrate: “Venezuela will be free”

The day before the inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro, thousands of oppositionists gathered for a final demonstration in the Venezuelan capital Caracas, writes AFP.

70-year-old Rafael Castillo says he is ready to risk everything to remove Maduro from power.

“I will leave my skin on the asphalt for my children, but it will be worth it, because Venezuela will be free.”

However, the crowds were not as large as before the election in late July. Many have been discouraged by the violence that followed on election day, when 28 were killed, hundreds injured and thousands arrested.

The opposition, the EU, the US and a dozen Latin American countries have rejected Maduro’s alleged election victory, but loyal institutions such as the electoral authority, the supreme court and the military back him.

Maduro himself promises that “fascists” who try to disrupt his inauguration will be dealt with by the security forces.
