Voices about Greenland

Analysis: Kremlin is worried – but Trump's threats could benefit them

The Kremlin, which has the Arctic in its sphere of interest, is reacting with concern to Trump's Greenland plans – but it could actually be good news for them, writes Ivor Bennett for Sky News.

On the one hand, it could lead to cracks and internal disputes in NATO, but above all, it is an expression of the same expansionism that Russia is practicing in Ukraine, he continues.

"It could help Putin legitimize the invasion of his neighbor and say: 'If the US wants to take territory in the name of national security, why can't we?'"

At first glance, it may seem like Trump is confusing foreign policy with real estate deals, but his expansionist attempts to strengthen the US at the expense of small-country allies embody the "America first" principle, writes Stephen Collinson for CNN.

“Trump, in his unique way, is grappling with questions of national security that the United States must confront in a new world shaped by the rise of China, the inequality of globalization, melting polar ice caps and imbalances of power.”

Trump’s talk of foreign conquests runs counter to an American self-image that was established at independence in 1776: that the United States is not a conquering empire, writes DN’s Ingmar Nevéus.

“The new republic was created as a counterpoint to the British empire it broke away from.”

Meloni: The Greenland threat is a message to China

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni does not believe that Donald Trump intends to force Greenland or Panama to itself by military means, she says, according to the AP.

– I think we can rule out that the United States will annex territory that interests them in the coming years.

Rather, she believes Trump is sending geopolitical messages in a “long-distance debate between great powers,” aimed at what she calls China’s increased interest in the Panama Canal and Greenland’s natural resources.

Meloni also says she would be happy to attend Trump’s inauguration on January 20, but that she needs to check her schedule first.
