EU Parliament postpones new deforestation rules

The EU Parliament has voted to postpone the introduction of new deforestation rules for another year, several news agencies report.

The decision was pushed through by an alliance of center-right and far-right members of parliament, writes AFP.

The legislation, which is to stop imports of products that contribute to the destruction of rainforests, has already been postponed once. The new decision means that the rules can apply no earlier than January 1, 2027, according to TT.

Climate success for the ozone layer – on the way to recovery

The size of the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica was among the smallest this year since 1992, shows a new report from the American space agency Nasa. The size of the hole varies from year to year, but has gradually decreased since a UN treaty in 1987.

“It is impossible to overestimate what a huge success story the Montreal Protocol is,” atmospheric scientist Laura Revell told Axios.

The ozone layer protects the Earth from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. When a hole in the layer was discovered in the 1980s, it received a lot of attention. Among other things, ozone-depleting gases were banned from household products – which has had a great effect.
