Trump's attack on Ukraine and the EU: "Zero gratitude"Updated 20.59 | Published 19.15
Donald Trump launched a furious attack on Ukraine and Europe on Sunday.
It was just that his criticism was not true.
At the same time, US and Ukrainian representatives were very positive after the peace talks in Geneva on Sunday.
Quick version
On Sunday, Donald Trump wrote a long critical post on the Truth Social platform, after the US presented a 28-point proposal for peace on Thursday:
–– Ukraina's “leadership” has expressed zero gratitude for our efforts, and Europe continues to buy oil from Russia, Trump wrote.
“Grateful to the US”
This is despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky having repeatedly thanked the US and the country’s president for their efforts to achieve peace. On Friday, after a conversation with US Vice President J D Vance about the peace plan, Zelensky said:
– Ukraine appreciates and has always appreciated President Trump’s efforts to stop the bloodshed, and we positively receive any realistic proposal, he said, according to the TRT news site.
On Sunday, he again expressed his gratitude to Trump.
– Ukraine is grateful to the United States, to all Americans, and especially to President Trump for the help with the Javelin missiles that save Ukrainian lives, Zelensky wrote on Telegram
As for the criticism of Europe’s purchase of Russian oil, only two EU countries do so: Hungary and Slovakia. And as recently as Friday, Trump gave both countries permission to buy Russian oil, despite US sanctions on the issue, according to the exiled Russian newspaper The Insider.
European counterproposal for peace has been developed
On Sunday, it also emerged that a counterproposal to the US peace plan is being developed in Europe.
The European peace proposal stipulates, among other things, that there should be no restrictions on the size of Ukraine's army, and that Ukraine should gain control of the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, according to the Washington Post , which has seen the European counterproposal.
According to the US 28-point plan, when peace is achieved, Ukraine should only have 600,000 soldiers and the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia should be operated jointly by Ukraine and Russia.
In addition, the European counterproposal contains provisions stating that all territorial disputes should only be handled after a ceasefire has been reached, according to both Bloomberg and the Washington Post.
The American plan stipulates that Russia will receive all of Luhansk and Donetsk regions, despite the fact that Ukraine currently controls large parts of Donetsk region.
"There can be a just and sustainable peace"
On Sunday, peace talks were also underway in Geneva, Switzerland, between American and European representatives.
On Sunday afternoon, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said:
- I think we've probably had the most productive and meaningful meeting so far in the whole process since we got involved, Rubio said according to CNN.
A few hours later, Rubio told the press that there had been "tremendous progress" in the talks and that they have a basic document.
- I'm very optimistic that we can get something done here, he says.
Ukrainian negotiator Andriy Yermak – who is Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s closest aide – also said the meeting had been very productive and could ultimately result in “a just and lasting peace,” according to the BBC.
Yermak said negotiations between European allies and the United States would continue in the coming days.
