Ukraine and Europe's response to Trump's peace plan

Ukraine and a number of European countries have agreed on a counterproposal to the US's criticized peace plan for the Ukraine war.

It includes, among other things, that Ukraine will receive NATO-like security guarantees from the US, reports Bloomberg.

Furthermore, the idea that Ukraine should currently give up large areas of land to Russia is dismissed. Territorial discussions can only be held after a ceasefire along the current front lines has come into effect, it is said.

The counterproposal will be presented at an announced meeting later today between Ukrainian and American representatives in Geneva, Switzerland, where representatives of France, Germany and the UK will also participate.

Formally, the meeting aims to discuss the peace plan for the Ukraine war that Donald Trump's administration has drawn up. It includes 28 points and has been heavily criticized for being too favorable to the attacking power Russia. The plan includes demands that Ukraine cede several regions to Russia and halve its military, as well as that the United States withdraw its military support to the country.

The Ukrainian-European counterproposal also requires that frozen Russian state assets be used to finance Ukraine's reconstruction. These should remain frozen until Moscow agrees to pay war reparations, according to Bloomberg.

There is also a provision on compensation to the United States for the "robust", Article 5-like (NATO's fundamental principle of "all for one") security guarantees that Europe wants Washington DC to give Ukraine. If Russia agrees to the proposal, sanctions against the country will be lifted in phases, it says.

Motförslaget ska läggas fram vid ett aviserat möte under dagen mellan ukrainska och amerikanska företrädare i Genève i Schweiz, där även representanter för Frankrike, Tyskland och Storbritannien deltar.

Formellt syftar mötet till att diskutera den fredsplan för Ukrainakriget som Donald Trumps styre tagit fram. Den innefattar 28 punkter och har kritiserats hårt för att vara alltför fördelaktig för anfallsmakten Ryssland. Planen innehåller bland annat krav på att Ukraina ger upp flera regioner till Ryssland och halverar sin militär, samt att USA drar tillbaka sitt militära stöd till landet.

I det ukrainsk-europeiska motförslaget krävs också att frusna, ryska statstillgångar får användas för att finansiera Ukrainas återuppbyggnad. Dessa ska fortsätta vara frusna tills Moskva går med på att betala krigsskadestånd, enligt Bloomberg.

Det finns också en skrivning om kompensation till USA för de ”robusta”, artikel 5-liknande (Natos bärande princip om ”alla för en”) säkerhetsgarantier Europa vill att Washington DC ger Ukraina. Om Ryssland går med på förslaget kommer sanktioner mot landet att lyftas i omgångar, heter det.
