President: “We must secure the country and protect the people”
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu says he is closely monitoring the security situation after 300 children were kidnapped in an attack on a Catholic school in western Nigeria. Around 50 of the students managed to escape and, according to the president, they have now been found.
He also said that 38 people who were kidnapped in an attack on a church service in another state last week have also been rescued.
“I will not give up. Every Nigerian in every state has the right to security. I will ensure that we secure this country and protect the people,” he wrote on X.
50 schoolchildren in Nigeria have escaped their kidnappers
50 of the more than 300 schoolchildren who were kidnapped in Nigeria on Friday have managed to escape, the school said, according to several media outlets.
The students were kidnapped in an attack on a Christian school in Niger state in western Nigeria.
A total of 303 students and twelve staff members were taken prisoner in the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
