Broad support for Zelenskyj ahead of the meeting with Trump
Several European leaders confirm their support for Ukraine ahead of President Volodymyr Zelenskyj's meeting with Donald Trump on Sunday.
"A strong and successful Ukraine in the EU is a central security guarantee," said European Council President António Costa in a statement according to Reuters.
Several European leaders have held a meeting ahead of the meeting, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) said.
"We are all united behind Ukraine and Ukraine's efforts to bring a reasonable end to the war," he writes on X.
Both German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for Ukraine on Saturday.
“The European Commission continues to work intensively to accompany Ukraine into the EU,” its president Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X.
Zelensky is currently in Canada with Prime Minister Mark Carney, who says he stands “by Ukraine’s side.” He has a new 20-point peace plan to discuss with Donald Trump on Sunday.
Analysis: A give and take for Zelenskyj
Ukrainian
President Zelenskyj must prepare for give and take during tomorrow's
meeting with Trump, says Sky News military analyst Sean Bell.
There is a willingness to compromise among the Ukrainian people after four years of bloody war, he continues.
- Territory will almost certainly have to be given up, perhaps not permanently, but somehow.
The
most important thing for Ukraine is security guarantees to prevent
Russia from catching its breath and striking again, Bell continues.
Zelenskyj
comes to Florida with the message that he wants peace and that 90
percent of the deal is done - but much depends on how well he manages to
convey that to Trump, writes Samira Hussain for the BBC.
"Remember that Trump has been very clear that only he himself can mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine."
There
are many knots to untie, not least the issue of a demilitarized zone in
Donbas, which has so far received no response from Trump, writes
Hussain.
