Zelensky on Trump meeting: Security guarantees needed

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is once again emphasizing the importance of security guarantees from the West. Such guarantees are in focus at today's meeting with US President Donald Trump on a peace plan for the Ukraine war.
Security guarantees will be the main topic of discussion during the meeting on a peace agreement for the Russian offensive war, Zelensky told journalists on the flight to Florida, where the meeting is being held.
The president also counters American demands for elections and referendums by saying that such cannot take place under "the conditions we live in today". However, the Ukrainian said earlier this week that he would consider holding a referendum on the 20-point peace plan that is now on the table - if Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire.
"I'm not clinging to my chair," he tells the Kyiv Independent, among others.
A draft of the peace plan has been sent to Moscow, but Russian representatives are not participating in today's talks. The White House has decided to bring forward the meeting, which has been described as crucial for Ukraine's future, to 7 p.m., Swedish time.
Zelensky is flanked by chief negotiator Rustem Umyrov, but also his finance minister, deputy foreign minister, chief of staff and an adviser to the presidential staff.
Ahead of the meeting, Zelensky met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday and participated in a digital meeting with several European leaders.
