Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were arrested and taken to the United States.

Venezuela will now be ruled by the United States.

- We will rule the country until we can carry out a safe and proper transition, says President Donald Trump.

After this morning's operation in the Venezuelan capital Caracas where the country's President Nicolás Maduro Maduro was arrested together with his wife, the country is without a leader.

At a press conference on Saturday evening, Swedish time,  Donald Trump announced that the United States will rule the country.

- We will rule the country, said Donald Trump and added that he did not want the Maduro regime to continue under another leader.

According to Trump, the United States will now rule the country until a safe transition can take place.

Oil companies to step in

Exactly how a transition will work in practice or how long it will take was not something that President Donald Trump mentioned.

When journalists at the press conference asked questions about who will now govern Venezuela, Trump replied that it will be governed by "purposeful leadership".

Trump also mentioned that the United States will build up the oil infrastructure in Venezuela.

- We will let our very large American oil companies, the largest in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, repair the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure and start making money for the country, said Donald Trump.

“The people are very happy”

The US president also talked about American companies that will repair the infrastructure. He mentioned a “partnership” between the US and Venezuela that, according to him, will make the people of Venezuela “rich, independent and safe”.

The night’s attacks in Venezuela were planned and the US Army’s special forces, Delta Force, led the operation, according to sources to CNN. Both Nicolás Maduro and his wife Celia Flores are said to have been “pulled out of bed” during the operation that took place in their home.

Trump himself has explained the operation as a goal to create freedom for the Venezuelan people.

– I think the people of Venezuela are very happy. They love the US, said Trump.

The expert: Trump has hubris

Jan Hallenberg, professor emeritus of political science at the Swedish National Defense University, takes a serious view of Saturday’s developments.

Can the US legally arrest a head of state in Venezuela in this way?

– No. Trump and the US are violating international law now, but Trump is ignoring it. Who is going to stop him? The worst that can happen is that the UN Security Council condemns this and even then there will be no consequences.

According to Jan Hallenberg, the arrest will have major consequences.

– This is an American president who thinks he has managed to accomplish something big and difficult – without American losses. But the difficult part was not removing Maduro, but what is to happen now.

The US expert highlights the Iraq War in 2003 as an example.

– Why should the population of Venezuela accept that the US is ruling now? The US has tried to remove dictators before and then it has gone badly. So that this has happened now is not good. If you look back at 2003, hundreds of thousands of people died in civil war and also many American soldiers. Why would it be better now?

So the people can fight back

Jan Hallenberg believes that parts of the Venezuelan population will fight back against the US.

– But they have no way to fight back against the US in the US. That is why I believe that a low-level resistance will emerge in some form. Among other things, through attacks on American soldiers and politicians.

Does this mean that the US and Venezuela are nows at war?

– The US has carried out an act of war, but Venezuela has hardly any opportunity to respond to it. This has become an occupation where Trump completely ignores the voice of the Venezuelan people.

Furthermore, Jan Hallenberg believes that the American operation was prompted by hubris.

– Trump has hubris, an overconfidence in his own abilities. It is a very dangerous attitude to have in international politics. Many old men before him have had it and then it has not ended well.
